Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

“The past affects the present, even without our being aware of it.” – Francine Shapiro

Traumatic experiences and painful memories can continue to impact us long after the events are over—sometimes in ways we don’t fully understand. EMDR therapy is a proven approach that helps individuals release the emotional weight of these memories and find relief from distress. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, EMDR works by using a technique called bilateral stimulation (BLS)—gentle eye movements, tapping, or sounds—while you briefly focus on a difficult memory. This process helps the brain “reprocess” stuck experiences, reducing their emotional intensity and allowing you to integrate them in a healthier way.

What You Can Expect in EMDR Therapy

EMDR follows a structured eight-phase process that prioritizes both safety and healing:

  1. History Taking – Your therapist gets to know you and develops a plan tailored to your needs.

  2. Preparation – You learn grounding and coping techniques to ensure you feel safe before starting.

  3. Assessment – Together, you’ll identify specific memories and the negative beliefs connected to them.

  4. Desensitization – Bilateral stimulation is used as you recall the memory, gradually lowering its emotional impact.

  5. Installation – A more positive belief is reinforced to replace the old, unhelpful one.

  6. Body Scan – Your therapist helps you notice and release any lingering physical tension.

  7. Closure – Each session ends by ensuring you feel calm and grounded.

  8. Reevaluation – In the following sessions, progress is reviewed, and the next steps are determined.

How EMDR Can Help

Many people find that after EMDR therapy, they no longer feel “stuck” in the past. Memories that once triggered strong distress often lose their intensity, and individuals report:

  • Reduced anxiety, stress, or trauma symptoms

  • Greater emotional resilience and balance

  • Freedom from intrusive memories or flashbacks

  • A stronger sense of confidence and well-being

At Pacifica Counseling & Psychiatry, our trained EMDR clinicians provide a safe, compassionate space to process your experiences. Whether you’ve faced trauma, grief, or simply feel weighed down by the past, EMDR can help you move forward with greater peace of mind and emotional strength.
